The sound of the oud, a traditional Middle Eastern stringed instrument, intertwined with Western European instruments such as the recorder, viola da gamba, and medieval fiddle, is pleasant and invites the listener to explore the multilayered cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean. The album also features the lyra, a folk string instrument widely used in the Balkan Peninsula. This is an excellent project to explore the points of contact and overlap between European ancient music and music of the Near East, from the Western European court music of medieval Greece, where the Byzantine Empire, the successor to the Roman Empire, flourished and crusades were frequent, to Turkish classical music from the 16th century onward, when the Ottoman Empire extended its dominance, using the same combination of instruments. This program is a counterpart to the earlier \"MNEME: Memories\" (CD-16306), and brings to mind the Balkans of days gone by. The engineering is superb, and this is an exquisite piece that will immerse you in exoticism and historical exploration amidst the natural sound of the strange tones.
