She was born in 1980 in apartheid-torn South Africa, and her mother took her to Cape Town to avoid the riots, chaos, and to escape to a safer place. It was there that she heard by chance on the radio and opened her eyes to the wonders of opera. Eventually, she enrolled in a South African music academy under the post-apartheid Mandela regime and began studying to become a singer. There, South African composer Kevin Volant discovered the beauty of her incomparable voice and arranged a plane ticket to London for her. She auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and also participated in the Young Artist Program at Covent Garden, where she achieved a breakthrough. Today, she is based at Covent Garden and the Stuttgart Opera House, where she is highly acclaimed. Her arias are infused with African voices and her own fresh style.
