David Gilmour|"Luck and Strange" The latest work by the charismatic guitarist of Pink Floyd after a nine-year absence!
Featuring legendary drummer Steve Gadd and a host of other fine musicians, the title track features the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright! The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright!
Recorded over five months in Brighton and London, Luck and Strange is David Gilmour's first album of all new songs in nine years, since 2015's Rattle That Lock. It was produced by David Gilmour and Charlie Andrew (ALT-J, Marika Hackman, and others). The project began when David Gilmour was so impressed with the production work of Charlie Andrew, who worked on the Mercury Prize-winning indie band ALT-J, that he sent him a direct message on Instagram. David Gilmour describes the new and unprecedented production process.
I called Charlie over to my house." He listened to some demos and said, "By the way, why do I have to have a guitar solo here?" "Fade out on all of them? Can't some of them just end?" What a statement. He is wonderfully lacking in knowledge and respect for what I have been doing. He is very direct and not at all deflated. That's the best part. For me, it's just so good. I just don't like to be told what to do.
The majority of the album's lyrics were written by his wife, Polly Samson, who has collaborated with David Gilmour for the past 30 years. Polly Samson says of the themes of "Luck and Strange".
'Written from the point of view of an aging person. The inevitability of death was constant." David Gilmore further states. We spent a lot of time talking and thinking about that sort of thing during and after the lockdown." Polly Samson also says that the experience of working with Charlie Andrew was liberating. She says, "He wanted to know what the song was about, and everyone playing on it wanted the lyrics to be reflected in their playing, and that worked out really well."
The album will feature eight new songs as well as a beautiful remake of "Between Two Points" by early 2000s indie duo The Montgolfier Brothers. Artwork and photography are by acclaimed artist Anton Corbijn (Anton Corbijn).
Musicians on this album include Guy Pratt (who has recorded and toured with Pink Floyd since 1987) and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts and Steve Distanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno (Brian Eno's brother), Will Gardner, who arranged the strings and chorus, and legendary drummer Steve Gadd.
The title track, "Luck and Strange," also features the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, and was recorded at a jam in a barn at David Gilmour's home in 2007.
Some of the recordings are from the "Von Trappt" live streaming that David Gilmour and family did to a worldwide audience during the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns. Daughter Romany Gilmore sang and played harp, and sang lead vocals on "Between Two Points. Her son, Gabriel Gilmore, also sings backing vocals. Son Charlie Gilmore also wrote the lyrics to the album's final track, "Scattered," which inspired the image on the album cover, photographed and designed by Anton Corbin.
David Gilmore on working with families in Luck and Strange.
Polly and I have been writing songs together for over 30 years, and the live streaming of "Von Trappt" showed a wonderful fusion of Romany's voice and harp playing. It's inspired me to throw out some of my past ties, throw out the rules, and just do what I feel like doing. It's a lot of fun.
