Vaughan Williams

Berliner Philharmoniker European Concert 2013 in Prague Rattle's stick shines with his best partner, Kožená! The Berliner Philharmoniker's annual European Concerts are held in the beautiful Hall of Spain. Each year, the concert is held in a historic building, and for 2013, the gorgeous Spain Hall in the ancient city of Prague Castle was chosen as the venue. Prague Castle stands tall along the banks of the Vltava River, which flows through the capital city of Prague. It is there that the famous Spanish Hall was built by Rudolf II to display his precious art collection. The first piece performed was Vaughan Williams' Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. This work was composed by Vaughan Williams as a fantasy for three groups of string ensembles, using as its motif the melody of the "Poetic Arrangement for Archbishop Parker" by the Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis. The three separate ensembles (string orchestra, small string ensemble, and string quartet) are exquisitely intertwined, and the string sounds they create in response to each other are impressive, and Rattle's subtle interpretation is as impressive as it sounds. And then there is Dvorak's Bible Songs, performed by the famous Czech flower Magdalena Kožená. This is a collection of 10 songs using "Psalms" from the Czech Old Testament, written by Dvořák during his time in New York. Dvořák arranged five of the songs from this collection for orchestral accompaniment, and the other five were arranged by Zemánek, then conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The eloquent orchestra and Kožená's beautiful voice and skillful expression overwhelm the audience in this performance. The main program, Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, will come alive in a modern, sophisticated performance that only Rattle can deliver. Daishin Kashimoto is the concertmaster. King International
