Description:

Bernard Haitink was the principal conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (as it was then called) from 1961 to 1988, and left many wonderful recordings. When it comes to Mahler's (1860-1911) "Symphony No. 4" by this duo, old fans will remember the clear and light sound of the bell in the 1967 recording (soprano: Ellie Amerink). However, this live performance recorded in 1982 has been acclaimed by many as even better than the aforementioned performance. The soft reverberations of the Concertgebouw (the name of the hall), the mellow sound of each instrument, and, above all, Haitink's sympathetic musicality perfectly matched the unique atmosphere of Mahler's 4th, and the soprano who dominated the world with her performance in "Salome", Even the distinctive appearance of Maria Ewing, the soprano who dominated with her performance of "Salome," came across as a character from a fairy tale.
