Description:
The Diotima Quartet and Joseph Houston perform the chamber works of Albanian-born British composer Tomasz Simak! This is a collection of chamber music by Albanian-born British composer Thomas Simaku. Thomas Simaku (1958-) graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Tirana, Albania, and studied with David Blake at York University in England, where he was awarded a doctorate in composition in 1996. He has studied with Bernard Rands at Tanglewood and with Brian Farnihough in the "Composers Workshop" at California State University. He is a professor of composition at York University. His works have been performed in Europe and the United States, where he has received praise for his expressive music that combines austerity and modernism in a unique way. Catena I, whose name is derived from the Latin word for "chain," is "a network of different levels of association, musical and otherwise, with the 'matrix' of repetitive sounds at the beginning of the piece." Commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, "String Quartet No. 5" was premiered by the Diotima Quartet.Debussy's Forgotten Images was composed in 2018 for York Late Music's concert series commemorating the 100th anniversary of Debussy's death, in response to a request to "choose one Debussy piece, quote for a minute, and continue in your own style. The piece "con-ri-sonanza" is a "Bill Colleran in Memoriam," a tribute to the "great monarch" of the music publishing world. It is composed around four notes taken from Colleran's name. Homage to Kurtag" is a piece based on a chord with two notes, "A" and "G," which is associated with "Gyorgy Kurtag. The "String Quartet No. 4," composed and dedicated to the Diotima Quartet, is a 22-minute piece in four movements and two "interludes. British pianist Joseph Houston Joseph Houston lives in Berlin and works primarily in the contemporary and experimental music genres. He is the pianist for the London-based new music group Octandre Ensemble, whose repertoire includes works from 1945 onward. The Quatuor Diotima quartet was formed in 1996 by graduates of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
