Description:
Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten completes his debut solo album. His most personal work, "Cayos for the Fly," is released. Grian Chatten will release his debut solo album, Chaos For The Fly, on Partisan Records. The Fontaines D.C. vocalist worked on the album with producer Dan Carey. Thirty miles north of Dublin, along a windswept boardwalk, lies a tired casino. It is the kind of place that anyone familiar with the rusted charm of forgotten coastal towns knows. Now shuttered, the lounge bar echoes with the clink of billiard balls and glasses, as well as the clatter of slot machines. This is where "Chaos For The Fly" was born. I was walking along Stony Beach one night and a song came to me in the surf. I was just standing there watching the waves. Then I heard the sound. Every part of it, from the chord progression to the string arrangement," Chatten recalls. The finished song could have been reshaped and reworked with the band members of Fontaines D.C., but Chatten decided to handle it differently. I just thought, "I want to make this up as I go along. I know where we're going next as a band, but that's not where I want to go with this song. There are some exaggerated parts of my soul that I wanted to express. The other guys are creative and songwriters in their own right. So I didn't want to go to them and say, 'No, it has to be this way. I didn't want to compromise these songs in that way," he explains. Co-produced by longtime Fontaines D.C. producer Dan Carey, the album is Chatten's most poetic work to date. He says, "A lot of this album was written with just me and one guitar, and I really like the idea of boiling down the elements. It feels like the songs are in the palm of my hand, and I can control them with just me and my guitar. It adds intensity as a result," he says. Over the nine songs on "Chaos For The Fly," all the emotions and stories of life are captured. Some are painful, to be sure, but by shaping them and bringing his voice to life, Chatten has created something of unique beauty. This is a place you will not only want to visit, but will want to return to again and again.
