The Choir of Queen's College, one of Oxford University's most prestigious choirs, has been expanding its activities. Their new album, \"That Sweet City,\" combines works by Kenneth Layton, an English composer at the height of his creative powers, and Leif Vaughan Williams, a British music great nearing the end of his life. The two works are linked by their circumstances and their connection to Oxford and Queen's College. Both works were premiered at the College Music Society's Summer Concerts at Queen's in 1951 and 1952, respectively.The cantata \"Veris Gratia\" (Blessings of Spring) was composed when Layton was still an undergraduate at the College, and the other, \"Oxford Dirge,\" was composed at the end of Vaughan Williams' long career; he was 79 at the time of its premiere. Both evoke the countryside and pastoral, but Leighton's work celebrates young love in spring and summer through the hedonistic poetry of the medieval Carmina Burana, while Vaughan Williams' work is full of nostalgia for a pastoral past evoked through Matthew Arnold's poetry.
