This work was originally a medieval fable adapted into a play by Hoffmanstahl in 1912. It is a cautionary tale about faith and good deeds, and is a staple of European audiences, with an annual outdoor performance at the Salzburg Summer Music Festival. The Finnish National Opera commissioned Sibelius (1865-1957) to compose music for the story in 1916, and the work was quickly completed, with rehearsals in October and the first performance in November. It was a great success on that occasion, but the only mistake was that Sibelius did not prepare a \"suite\" for it. This caused him to lose the opportunity to perform it in subsequent years, and it seems to have been forgotten. There are some lively parts, but the centerpiece is probably the Largo section in which the Grim Reaper appears. The truly mystical atmosphere of the sound is a prelude to the later music to the firm praise of God. Other pieces include \"Two Solemn Melodies,\" which reflects the heavy mood of the First World War, and \"In Memoriam,\" which was performed at Sibelius' own funeral.
