The incomparable guitarist Segovia was almost 51 years old when he made his first recordings in the United States in January 1944. At the time, Segovia had already enjoyed decades of international fame, but he made only sporadic recordings between 1927-39, and then equally infrequently through the 1950s. The first volume of the Naxos Segovia recordings covers all of the New York recordings that were released over a three-week period in January 1944, including two tracks recorded in London in June 1949.
