Description:

Böhm & VPO / March 1977 Japan Tour - The legendary "Denen" live performance by the then 83-year-old Böhm & VPO is finally available on CD! In 1977, Böhm and the VPO visited Japan for a total of six concerts from March 2 to 12. This year was the 150th anniversary of Beethoven's death, and the program included four of his symphonies (2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th), but the concert presented here on the first day of their visit to Japan on March 2 included the 5th "Fate", the 6th "Denen", and the encore performance of the overture "Leonore" No. 3. The complete 2-CD set of the concert was newly released by ALTUS this time. The complete 2-CD set of this concert is the new ALTUS disc, and it is nothing short of amazing. Recently, many live recordings of Böhm have been released by ORFEO D'OR and others, and as I listened to them, I came to know that Böhm is in his element only in live performances. But the combustion of this conductor, who was 83 years old at the time, was not half as strong here as in his later years. In the fifth, the tempo at the beginning is quite slow, but the tension and energy are tremendous, especially in the final movement, where the driving force is overwhelming. The strong timpani playing in the coda is also great. The third and later movements of the "Rural" are suddenly even better, and the final movement in particular is a rare masterpiece. The harmonies were packed to the brim, the sound was thick, and it was painfully clear that the conductor and orchestra were playing with all their might, yet the beauty of the sound was not lost at all, which can only be said to be the VPO (personally, I can't say I like the VPO, but if you listen to this, you can't help but be impressed. (Personally, I am not a fan of the VPO, but anyone who hears this must be impressed.) Of course, it was Böhm who brought out the best in the orchestra. In the liner notes of this disc, Mr. Kuniyoshi Uno declares that this is "the best one of the same piece", which is not an exaggeration.Anyway, this two-disc set will allow you to experience to the bone how great a conductor Böhm was, whose popularity is said to have plummeted after his death, and how brilliant the VPO really was when it was "truly" the VPO.
