Description:
A rare sound recording of the young Silvestrov, who has been attracting attention for his healing piano music, has seen the light of day. Valentin Silvestrov (1937-) has somehow become a popular composer of new age style piano music, but in the 1960s and 1970s he was famous as one of the most avant-garde composers in the Soviet Union. This album is a collection of works from that period, including melodia recordings and other hard-to-find items that will delight both Silvestrov fans and fans of contemporary Russian music. The style of early Silvestrov is one of short-breathed material fragments floating and resonating between instruments, with the flickering of celesta, vibraphone, and harp creating a distinctive tone. Although avant-garde, the delicate sound world is reminiscent of Toru Takemitsu, and the seeds of today's artistic style can be felt. Silvestrov has composed seven symphonies to date, and it is a pleasure to include his second symphony from 1965.It is a mere 11 minutes long with flute, percussion, piano, and string ensemble, and has been called a "madrigal without lyrics. The "Meditation" dedicated to Rostropovich is a 32-minute work. The sustained notes of the empty fifths in the "Re" and "La" are reminiscent of the opening of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The score calls for "the stage lights to be turned off and the conductor and orchestra members to light up the stage by striking a match" in a terrifying catastrophe with ff, a rarity for Silvestrov. All are conducted by Igor Blashkov, a friend of Silvestrov's and a student of Mravinsky, which is also valuable. The soloists, including soprano Nelly Lee and cello player Poterpov, are among the most talented performers of the Soviet era. The performance reaches heights that even the most recent recordings cannot achieve. King International
