Hepzibah Menuhin

Description:

100 years since the birth and 40 years since the death of Hepsiba Menuhin. A commemorative box containing famous performances, previously unreleased sound and video recordings. "An independent spirit, the most graceful and generous woman among the great pianists of the 20th century" These words about Hepsiba Menuhin are summed up in the words of the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Bruno Montsangion, who was close to both of them. The following is a brief description of the film. For this 11-CD box (9CD+2DVD), the renowned French filmmaker collected and compiled sound and video recordings from 1933 to 1980, one year before Hepsiba Menuhin's death at age 60. The collection includes many world premieres, including live performances and television. Not only does it document her important role as a duo partner to her brother, but it sheds new light on her qualities as a recitalist and concerto soloist. It also provides fascinating insights into her life, her relationship with Yehudi, and her humanitarian beliefs and activities. Hepsiba Menuhin was born in San Francisco on May 20, 1920, and studied piano from an early age. When the Menuhin family moved to Europe in the late 1920s, she studied with Marcel Champy in Paris and Rudolf Serkin in Basel. She began giving concerts with Yehudi, and in 1933, Hepzibah and Yehudi recorded Mozart's Violin Sonata in 1933, which won the Candide Prize. (included in this box). By the time she was a teenager, Hepzibah could speak English, Hebrew, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian; she married Lindsay Nicholas in 1938 and spent most of the 1940s in Australia. In 1947, after a break of almost a decade, she and Yehudi reestablished their long-term duo partnership. 1954 ended her marriage, and in 1955 she married sociologist Richard Hauser. The couple moved to England, where she gave birth to a daughter. In London, Hauser worked with the poor and homeless, and Hepzibah also served as president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She continued her busy performing career until shortly before her death from cancer in 1981.1) Pianist Hepsiba Menuhin, who celebrated her centennial in May 2020, died 40 years ago on January 1, 1981, at age 60. She had a considerable career as a soloist in concertos and recitals, but the music world knows her best as the duo partner of her brother Yehudi, one of the most famous violinists of the 20th century. They played together in public from the time Hepsiba was 13 and Yudi was 17. Included are many recordings they made together, but also document her virtuosic performances as a recitalist and concerto soloist. (1/2) Warner Music Japan
