The music for this love story between Violet, an American woman he met on a luxury liner, and Nadir, a Persian prince, is characterized by an innovative sound. While inheriting the classical traditions of Germany and Russia as well as Puccini’s style, it also reveals the influence of Mahler and Scriabin, boldly fusing these elements with Gershwin-esque jazz. However, with the rise of the Nazis, he was forced into exile due to his Jewish heritage and suffered the tragedy of losing his family in a concentration camp. After the war, he distanced himself from the public eye and continued to refuse performances of his own works, but after his death, the score was discovered among his personal effects, and more than half a century later, this masterpiece was revived. Nearly 90 years after its premiere, the German premiere was finally realized.
