Rachel Fenlon has been playing the piano and singing at the same time since she was a child. But it took her ten years before she found the courage to give that performance in public for the first time. The first time she sang while playing the piano at an all-Schubert recital in Toronto lit a fire in her heart, and in the decade since, Fenlon has carefully nurtured that fire, exploring a variety of repertoire and performing at music festivals and in concert halls. When considering this first recording, Schubert's music was an option, but the decision of which piece to choose was a difficult one: in the winter of 2020, during the pandemic, Fenlon spent a lonely time living alone near a forest outside of Berlin and seeing no one. The Winter Journey she learned at that time resonated deeply with her, and she studied the piece for the next two years. In the summer of 2022, Fenlon performed "Winterreise" for the first time in Berlin, and continued to perform it throughout the festival season, leading to the decision to record it. Fenlon said, "For me, 'Winterreise' is as much about the music as it is about myself. I have never found myself or lost myself as much as I did in Winterreise.It is my greatest gift to be able to sit at the piano and share my interpretation of this great work, accompanied by myself, and to add to the vast body of recordings of this music."
