Description:
Edna Stern, pianist and professor at the Royal College of Music, has released several critically acclaimed albums on the ORCHID CLASSICS label, most notably French composer Montgerud's "Sonatas and Exercises" (ORC100063), which won the 2017 Gramophone Magazine Critic of the Year Gramophone Magazine's Critic of the Year Award in 2017. The album features the young Schumann's ambitious "Carnival" and "Children's Scenes," as well as her own works. Stellen plays the character of each of Schumann's alter egos, "Florestan" and "Eusebius". The last piece recorded, her own "To-nal or not to-nal," has a tonal or atonal meaning, and is a tribute to Schumann, as well as a fascinating work of less than 10 minutes, born from a question to herself as to whether she should write her works in tonal or atonal music.
