The solo cantata \"Nisi dominus\" (Unless the Lord builds the house) was written around 1716. The text is taken from Psalm 127 (126), the \"Song of Solomon,\" the ancient king of Israel, who sang \"Unless the Lord builds the house, the labors of the builders are in vain. Stabat Mater (Our Lady of Sorrows)\" is a masterpiece that expresses the grief of Mary's mother at the crucifixion of her son Jesus Christ. The alto (counter tenor) soloist stands out in this beautiful work. The soloist, Nicholas Spanos, is a Greek-born countertenor. Known for his wide repertoire and the beauty of his voice, he has appeared in Handel's operas \"Oreste\" and \"Tamerlano,\" and is also highly regarded for his singing in Monteverti, Gluck, Britten's \"A Summer Night's Dream,\" and others.
