Led by his old friend Mickey Baker, it features full backing from an ironclad rhythm section comprising John Baldwin (John Paul Jones) and Ronnie Verrell. A masterpiece recorded for Decca in 1967 to celebrate the reunion of these two masters!

Mike Vernon was a key figure in the 1960s British blues boom and one of the most important producers of the era. For this album, he brought together Champion Jack Dupree—a seasoned piano bluesman based in Europe at the time—and legendary session guitarist Mickey Baker, who had moved to Paris, in London.

In stark contrast to his previous album—which featured young British bluesmen like Eric Clapton and showcased an earthy, roots-driven sound—this record unfolds with a vivid, gritty, urban electric blues that evokes his former New York days. Yet, it’s all performed in a relaxed atmosphere, as if he were savoring his long-awaited reunion with his longtime ally, Mickey Baker.

Also standout are the tight, groovy performances by John Baldwin (John Paul Jones)—who would later make a name for himself as Led Zeppelin’s bassist—and the skilled jazz drummer Ronnie Verrell. With master producer Mike Vernon’s brilliant casting shining through, this album stands as a definitive record of the British blues scene.

As a bonus track, this release includes a legendary performance by the two from their 1955 collaboration in New York.

Champion Jack Dupree and His Blues Band Featuring Mickey Baker
Piano, Vocals – Champion Jack Dupree
Electric Guitar, Vocals, Tambourine, Arranged By, Music Director – Mickey Baker
Bass Guitar – John Baldwin (John Paul Jones)
Drums - Ronnie Verrell
Tenor Saxophone - Bob Efford, Rex Morris
Baritone Saxophone - Harry Klein
Trumpet - Albert Hall
Producer, Arranged By, Music Director, Whistling - Mike Vernon
Liner Notes: Yoshihiro Masuda

Tracklisting:

1.
