It demands a gentle and beautiful sound, with a mezzo-soprano rather than a soprano set as the soloist. Although the work is often performed by small chamber orchestras, here it is performed by a full orchestra. Respighi is also known as a composer who was interested in Gregorian chant and church melody, and in this concerto, he successfully reproduced medieval church prayers by using the violins and orchestra as a choir. It is a nostalgic work with religious overtones.
