Bruno Walter (1876-1961) conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on January 21, 1907 in a concert in honor of Otto Nicolai, and conducted 189 concerts since then until May 29, 1960, the opening concert of the Vienna Art Week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mahler's birth. In 1975, after five years of negotiations with the Austrian Broadcasting Company (ORF) and Decca, CBS Sony (Japan) decided to release the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's second concert after the Second World War. After five years of negotiations with the Austrian Broadcasting Company (ORF) and the British Decca, CBS Sony of Japan released four LPs of live recordings of Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic performing in Vienna and Salzburg after World War II, which caused a sensation because of the richness of the performances. This 3-LP set features all of the recordings, mastered in DSD for the first time in 18 years from 38 cm monaural analog masters provided by ORF.
