The Second Concerto, which the composer wrote in just 17 days in preparation for its premiere, is a masterpiece distinguished by its rich melodies and virtuosity—from the solemn, Bach-like opening to the thrilling finale, a tarantella that blends speed and power. Concerto No. 5, “Egyptian,” is said to have been composed during Saint-Saëns’s stay in Egypt as a response to the Wagner boom of the time; while retaining traces of the sonata form, it employs a fantasia-like structure and harmonies that were experimental for Saint-Saëns. The second movement, which incorporates a Nubian love song sung by a Nile boatman and the croaking of frogs, is brimming with exotic charm, while the lively finale—mimicking the sound of a ship’s propeller—features breathtaking virtuosity. You can enjoy a magnificent performance by Torpcheski, who, with his innate charisma and breathtaking technique, fully and freely expresses the work’s character and emotion, all presented with a sound that is rich in realism.
Naxos Japan

Tracklisting:

1.Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22~Andante sostenuto
2.Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22~Allegro scherzando
3.Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22~Presto
4.Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major "The Egyptian', Op. 103~Allegro animato
5.Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major "The Egyptian', Op. 103~Andante
6.Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major "The Egyptian', Op. 103~Molto allegro
