In France, the Reformation movement by the Huguenots, influenced by the Swiss Calvinists, spread with the support of the nobility in various parts of the country, especially in southern France, and by the 1560s it had become a state of civil war known as the Huguenot Wars. Catherine de Medicis, the mother mother of King Charles IX, attempted to reconcile Catholics and Protestants by marrying the princess to a Huguenot ally and forced a wedding in Paris. Six days later, on the feast of St. Barthélemy (August 24, 1572), the Catholics massacred the Huguenots who had gathered in Paris for the wedding, and it spread as a popular uprising throughout France.1-4) is church music by French Huguenot composers; 5-6) is music from the Catholic side; 7-12) returns to Huguenot composers and includes secular music (chansons) as well as church music. 2017 is the 500th anniversary of Luther's Reformation. This is a well-produced program of works from the perspective of the impact of the Reformation on music and its unique musical culture, with a focus on works by little-known Reformed composers. Paul van Nieuwvel \u0026amp; the Wellgas Ensemble, a well-known authority in the performance and study of Flemish music, will present a superb performance.
