Guillermo Turina is a Spanish baroque cellist who has attracted attention with his groundbreaking recordings of the baroque cello by Francesco Spriani (COBRA 0053), Giacomo Facco (COBRA 0063), and other unknowns. The Dupaul brothers Jean-Pierre and Jean-Louis Dupaul, both exceptional cellists and 18th century French musicians who revolutionized the art of cello playing. After a successful debut shortly after at the Conseil Spirituel in Paris, and after achieving great success separately in England and Germany, respectively, they made their names in history as music director and cellist at the Prussian court in Germany. It is said that Beethoven's Cello Sonatas No. 1 & 2 and the Prussian Quartets by Haydn and Mozart were composed for the brothers. The Dupaul brothers' cello sonata collection was published in Paris in their youth and would have actually been performed at the Concert Spiritsuelle.Beethoven's Cello Sonata was the first work in the history of music to be written for "cello and piano," and the Dupaul brothers' sonata is accompanied by string-repellent instruments (archlute and guitar) in order to reproduce the sound and style of the time.
