This is the first recording in about 30 years and marks a new page in the history of the \"Matthew Passion\" performance. Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir, and the English Baroque Soloists toured the \"Matthew Passion\" 16 times over a six-month period beginning in Valencia in March 2016. This recording is from a live performance at the Anima Mundi Festival, the conclusion of that tour. The performance was held in the Pisa Cathedral, a representative building of Pisa Romanesque architecture, and is filled with rich reverberations that seem to descend from the heavens. Gardiner wrote rehearsal notes for the tour, which are included in the booklet of the album, beginning with the tour rehearsals that began on February 5, 2016, and spanning several months, and are very interesting.
