The new release by the Orfeo Orchestra \u0026amp; Purcell Choir, which he founded, is a collection of grand motets by Charles-Hubert Gervais, a composer of the same generation as Campra and Detusch. Having previously featured Gervais' classic musical tragedy \"Iperumnetre\" (GCD924007), they turn their attention to the composer's religious music as the next step, completing a collection of five grand motets consisting of five magnificent psalms and hymns. Gervais, who studied under the French Baroque master Lully, served as Music Director and Secretary of Music under Philippe II, Duke of Chartres (later Duke of Orleans), and was appointed Assistant Music Director of the King's Chapel Orchestra, is a composer who has paved the way for Rameau's works for the stage.
