Description:

Nelly Akopyan-Tamarlina is a well-known Russian pianist, and her second release on the PENTATONE label is the album "Chopin, Janacek, Metonel, Lyadov" (2008 & 2009 at Wigmore Hall) and "Brahms: Variations and Fugues on a Theme by Handel, Op.24 & 4 Ballades, Op.10" (PTC 5186677). Pianist Nelly Akopyan-Tamarlina became known for her "Ballades Op.10" album (PTC 5186677). She was a talented but ill-fated pianist during the Soviet era, and has remained a well-known figure to this day. Akopyan-Tamarina was born in Moscow in 1941. She studied at the Moscow Conservatory under the legendary pianist Alexander Golidenweisel and won the first prize at the Schumann International Voice and Piano Competition in Germany in 1963. Later, in 1974, she was awarded the Robert Schumann Prize, which seemed to start a smooth sailing career, but her performance activities were restricted by the authorities, who were also concerned about her exile, because her own sister had applied to emigrate to Israel. She also showed her talent as a watercolorist, which she began during her disadvantaged years, and even organized an exhibition of her work. She was rediscovered in 1983 when she performed in London, and since then she has based her teaching activities in England. Her teacher, Golidenweisel, was a great pianist of the Imperial Russian and Soviet era, and as a distinguished professor he trained Nikolaeva, Bellman, Kabalevsky, and others. While few of the generation who received direct instruction remain, Akopyan-Tamarina is a rare direct disciple, and her legendary Russian pianism, including her brilliant faltissimos, supreme pianissimos, and silvery chords, are still extant. This album features Chopin, Janacek, Metonel, and Liadov from live recordings made in 2008 and 2009 at the Wigmore Hall. The melancholy atmosphere of this selection is evoked by Slavic dances and a longing for nature, and the warm tone and unique charm of Akopyan-Tamarina's playing. Please enjoy the supreme art of Akopyan-Tamarina. Japanese obi and commentary are not included. King International Inc.
