Everyone has probably heard the French cancan "Hell's Gallop" at least once, often played at sports festivals. Based on Greek mythology, Gluck composed the opera "Orfeo e Euridice," which Offenbach parodied into "Heaven and Hell (Orphee in Hell). This year's production was directed by the wunderkind Barry Kosky, who is currently president of the Komische Oper in Berlin. The performance offers a fast-paced, ever-changing stage, erotic costumes, and Offenbach's satire and irony to full effect, making for an entertaining, raunchy experience.In the cast, Anne Sophie von Otter as Public Opinion is a real standout. Kathleen Leawek as Ulidis also delivers a physical performance and overwhelming singing. The best of all is Max Hoppe as John Stukes. Max Hoppe, who appeared from the beginning of the show, did all the lines and onomatopoeic words by himself, with the other characters lip-synching. The performance is by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Enrique Mazzola, a truly extravagant lineup. King International Inc.
