Netrebko and Eivazov's much-talked-about performances of Maddalena and Chenier at La Scala in 2017 under the direction of Chailly, "Andrea Chenier" Giordano's masterpiece about the tragic love between Chenier, a real-life poet during the French Revolution, and the Countess Maddalena. The world's greatest diva, Anna Netrebko, and her husband, Yusif Eivazov, play Chenier and Maddalena in this much-talked-about performance, which was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1896, and has not been performed at the same theater since Riccardo Chailly's production 32 years ago. The new production will be directed by Mario Martone, who is also a film and theater director. His cinematic point of view and the production's detailed reflection of the period make for a spectacular visual experience. For the singers, the work requires both melodic expression and dramatic acting skills, especially for the poet Chenier, who needs to express himself musically in a wide range of registers, including arias in each act. In this respect, Aivazov was excellent, and "One day, looking at the blue sky" and "Like a sunny day in May" are shining examples of his tenor singing of all time.Netrebko also delivers a superb performance with his rich, lustrous voice and skillful expression in "My Lost Mother," in which he sings of the hellish days after his mother was killed in the Revolution.
