Based on a modern English legend about a Dutch sea captain who wanders the seas forever as punishment for cursing God, this masterpiece from Wagner's late twenties was written in conjunction with the composer's own near-disaster experience. This is a live performance at the 2019 Florence May Festival Theater by Italian conductor Fabio Luisi, General Music Director of the Zurich Opera and Chief Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. Luisi, who combines a precise sense of style with an overflowing musical passion, makes the dramatic music resonate eloquently. The production is directed by Scottish-born Paul Callan. The tension and intensity of the production is palpable. The singers include Mikhail Petrenko, one of the most popular bass singers of his day, Thomas Gazelli as the Dutchman, and Marjorie Owens as Zenta, who risks her life to save the cursed captain.
