Description:
Jacques Offenbach was called "Mozart of the Champs-Elysées" in Paris in the late 19th century for his numerous hit operettas, including "The Tales of Hoffmann" and "Heaven and Hell," directed by the genius Tobias Kratzer. In the late 19th century, he was called "Mozart of the Champs-Elysées." In his last years, Offenbach produced only one opera, "The Tales of Hoffmann". It was unfinished at the time of Offenbach's death. It is based on three novels written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, a German Romantic poet and composer. It is a fantastical and mysterious tale of the poet Hoffmann, his three heroines (the doll Olympia, the diva Antonia, and the prostitute Julietta), three demons, and the muse who watches over him. The music is also famous and gorgeous, including "Hoffmann's Boat Song" and "Kleinsack's Tale. This production is based on the new critical edition by "Michael Kay & Jean-Christophe Keck" and directed by the brilliant Tobias Kratzer. Kratzer is a young German artist who has attracted attention for his avant-garde stage design, and his new production of "Tannhäuser" at the 2019 Bayreuth Festival has become the talk of the town. The Kay & Keck version allows the performers to freely choose and structure the music from past editions, allowing for different songs to be used in each performance. Kratzer's production is a contemporary suspenseful reworking of the story of Hoffman and his tragic love affair with three women from his past, which takes place in an apartment building. Hoffman is portrayed as a drug-addicted stalker man, while Muse, traditionally played by a man, is portrayed as a woman in love with Hoffman. The singers are also talented, with John Osborne, a lyric tenor from the U.S., as Hoffman. The performance is not to be missed by anyone, including Irwin Schrott, a bass-baritone singer from Uruguay, South America, who is extremely popular for his deep, soft, seductive voice and charming appearance, and who is scheduled to perform as Domingo's understudy in the cultural program for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
