MGMT's fifth album in six years, "Loss of Life," MGMT's first new album in six years, was produced by members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser with Patrick Wimbley ( Beyoncé, Lil Yottie), and mixed by Dave Fridman (The Flaming Lips, Spoon). The song "Dancing In Babylon" on the album features French songwriters Christine and the Queens, the first time in the band's history that they have been featured on the album. Other artists include Danielle Lopatin (One Autrix Point Never), Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), and James Richardson. Commenting on the album, the band said, "After a long period of preparation, we are very proud to have spawned a new album relatively painlessly and are happy to be able to present this baby to the world.Musically, it's about 20% adult contemporary, but we keep it at that level, seriously," he commented. The first single from the album, "Mother Nature," has a simple band structure with guitars and synths as the main instruments, but the song opens with a melancholy narrative and climaxes with a storm of anthemic noise at the end of the song. About the song, the band commented, "The song depicts a MGMT-style myth in which the protagonist of one story persuades the other protagonist to embark on an adventure of destiny together. It sounds a bit like Oasis in parts." (1/2)
