George Coleman had left Davis' quintet around April 1964, and Davis was again without a saxophonist. So Tony Williams recommended Sam Rivers, a tenor saxophonist from Boston.

There were several performances scheduled, but only three are known to have actually taken place: the famous July 14 performance at Kosei-Nenkin Kaikan in Tokyo, which was released on LP, and the lesser-known July 12 (Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, Tokyo) and 15 (Maruyama Park Open-Air Concert Hall, Kyoto), which are introduced in this set. The only three performances are on July 12 and 15.

There are no recordings of Miles and Rivers performing together other than the three concerts in Japan. Herbie Hancock (p), Ron Carter (b), and Tony Williams (d) also participated.

(From the manufacturer's information)

Tracklisting:

1.Autumn Leaves
2.So What
1.Stella By Starlight
2.Walkin' Into The Theme
1.If I Were A Bell
2.Oleo
3.Stella By Starlight
1.Walkin'
2.All Of You
3.Seven Steps To Heaven
