Born in Germany, Schmelzer, an Austrian composer whose brilliant violin music was enthusiastically supported by Ferdinand III and Leopold I, is also known as a violin virtuoso. The six sonatas included here are the earliest violin sonatas in the German-speaking world. The meticulously written music reveals the composer's solid knowledge and skill with the violin. It is highly likely that Schmelzer used an instrument made by Jacob Steiner, who was a famous violin maker before Stradivari. In this album, a replica of the Steiner violin is used to simulate the birth of brilliant violin music. Coupled with a passacaglia for organ written by Körl, an organist of the same period.
