Recorded over the course of a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, the album features the core trio—Murph (drums), Lou Barlow (bass\/vocals), and J. Mascis (guitar\/vocals)—performing nearly all the tracks, with local musician Ken Mauri adding piano and organ. The album roars from start to finish, and J’s guitar tone is wilder than ever. This is partly due to a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK1 amp he recently acquired. It’s the same amp Chris Dixon had during the recording of their first album, and J says he was trying to recapture the early MK1 sound—which is like a more powerful version of a Fender.
