Meekel Pol (1986-), one of the most talented pianists in Estonia, has been appointed Artist-in-Residence of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, the leading orchestra in his homeland, and will be recording Rachmaninov and Tubin! He studied with Ivari Ilja at the Estonian Music Academy and Ronan Ohola at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Mikhail Goertz, who was born in Estonia and has served as Kapellmeister and Assistant General Music Director of the Hagen Opera in Germany and as Permanent Conductor of the Estonian National Opera, have attracted attention from around the world. Rachmaninoff went to the U.S. because of the October Revolution, and Tuvin went to Sweden because of the former Soviet Union's invasion of Estonia in 1944.The leading Estonian performers of today carefully depict the charms and contrasts of the masterpieces for piano and orchestra composed by Rachmaninoff and Tubin, who, although from different generations, share similarities in the circumstances surrounding their lives, such as leaving their homeland for exile in another country to escape turmoil, in this fine performance.
