Description:

The long-awaited debut album "Nandakke?" (Nandakke) by AILI, a Belgian pop duo that has been attracting attention with their debut song "Dansu" reaching No. 1 on the Belgian singles chart for six weeks in a row despite the Japanese lyrics, has arrived! Formed in 2020, the unit features 10 tracks of surreal electro-pop, sunny electronica, house music and more from the Japanese-Belgian duo Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters. The album shows more than what you would expect from his acclaimed debut EP! Recorded over the course of six months in Orson's studio, which is lavishly equipped with vintage synthesizers, Nandakke? exchanged riffs and rhythms, bounced sounds and samples off each other, and let Iri and Orson lose themselves in the music. The result is an album full of wild ideas and a bold, playful spirit! There are pulsating electro-pop numbers like Aili's father's tale of his takoyaki recipe, and then there are explosive, high-energy workout songs like Up & Down. The notion of duality, the sense of blood flowing but separate, of being between two worlds and creating one's own, is a good description of Nandakke's psyche. It's the kind of thing you say when you're looking for the right words, like you know the words but you've forgotten how to say them." That's literally how I communicated with my father all the time," Maruyama explains. When I went to Japan, I felt that I knew the language and could speak it, but I still felt that my vocabulary was lacking in some areas. What's that?" always fills that gap. All of the lyrics come from the feelings of a 7 year old trying to speak Japanese.Whether singing about a word (Nandakke) that Aili spent years inventing to bridge the gap with her father (Nandakke), the peculiar relationship between fashion and the Japanese (Fashion), or a riff on a children's play song (Yubiki), the result is a remarkable album that defies easy categorization. The result is an album that defies easy categorization.
