The strength and beauty that pervade his works are, needless to say, derived from Latvian folk music. His works, which combine Renaissance and Baroque polyphony, fugue, chaconne, and other forms with his own original forms, are at times contemplative and at other times quietly exciting. The breathless piano melody at the beginning of track 1, \"Music for Piano, Strings and Timpani,\" an early work reminiscent of Bartók. This is certainly a strong euphoric experience that makes one lose track of time. Then, it gradually intertwines with the strings, building up to a high tide. The timpani, which appears only for a moment, is also impressive. Of course, Latvian folk songs are also used in this piece. The following pieces are even more meditative and beautifully convey the fleeting nature of the passage of time.
