Raised in a family where his brother Edidio (1709-1775) was a successful opera composer in Paris and his younger brother Emanuele (1714-1781) a jurist and philosopher, he studied in Naples and began his career as a composer and violinist, but soon left Naples and worked in Barcelona and Vienna before In 1726 he began working in the royal chapel in Madrid, and in 1736 he became conductor and choir director for the Duke of Osuna in Madrid. After a long period of time based in Madrid, he spent a year in Paris, and in 1755, he stayed in Schwerin in northern Germany.

In 1757, he arrived in Moscow, where he was asked by the rector of Moscow University to found the Moscow University Choir, and stayed there for eight years.

He then stayed briefly in Riga on the Baltic coast, where he worked as a teacher, and returned to Schwerin with his wife and four children in 1765, where he died around 1766.

The collection of sonatas appearing in this issue has been restored from microfilm discovered by a descendant of Denis at the Moscow State Library in 2019, printed by Mire Vendôme in Paris, and was composed before he came to Moscow.

The six sonatas are written in the Corelli-style Italian style, with the first three sonatas in this performance varied as flute sonatas and the latter three as violin sonatas.

The booklet (12 pages in English and Italian) includes commentary by organ and harpsichordist and researcher Alberto Mammarella.
