Two of Levanon's three previous Warner Classics releases have included works by Liszt, and now the young Israeli-born pianist has recorded the pinnacle of the Romantic piano repertoire, a collection of 12 "super-exercises."

The "Super-Exercises" by Franz Liszt are a milestone in Romantic piano music, a collection of 12 independent pieces for solo piano. As the name suggests, the pieces require extremely high performance technique, or "virtuosity," but the essence of the music lies not in a mere display of technique but in the rich poetic sentiment and deep artistry of each piece.

This collection is also known for the fact that Liszt revised it three times during his lifetime. The original "Twelve Exercises" (1826) was composed when Liszt was 15 years old, and in his youth he developed it into the "Grande Exercise" (1837), a work so technically complex that it is said to be unplayable. Finally, in 1852, as Liszt reached the age of maturity, he organized the technical issues and published the definitive edition that further deepened the musical and artistic content, the "Super-Exercises," which are widely performed today. This edition was dedicated to Liszt's teacher, Carl Cherny.

The pianist Levanon considers the word "superb" to mean not only a high level of performance technique, but also the mystical and spiritual meaning of the music. For him, the challenge of the "Superlative Exercises" was not to achieve virtuosity per se, but to reveal the vast emotional, spiritual, and symphonic expressiveness of the music. Each piece forms its own universe, multilayered and complex, demanding deeper expression than mere splendor, inviting the listener into its inner landscape.

Warner Music Japan
