Claude studied the flute with Georges Laurent, principal flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and went on to an international career as a soloist, appearing with Toscanini, Walter, Beecham, Stokowski, Casals, Stravinsky and, of course, his father. As a conductor he was music director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (1953-56) and of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic (1959-75), and appeared as a guest with orchestras around the world.\n\nClaude Monteux's musicianship as a flautist is heard at its clearest in the Mozart concerto: a deep, full-bodied sound and a fluent technique allied to inward depth and a poised elegance. There is no outward glitter here, but rather a performance that seems to sink into the substance of the music.\n\nAll three works are played on modern instruments and in modern style, the rich, full-flavoured sonority put to the service of readings that treat the music as timeless and shape it on a grand scale. The Bach in particular has been admired since LP days: nothing about it is \"baroque\" in manner, and it has a gravity and impact akin to Mengelberg's St Matthew Passion, while Monteux's rhythmic instincts give it splendid forward momentum. Claude Monteux's flute solos blend with his father's conducting to produce music of real character.\n\nThe coupling is a valuable programme of Ravel orchestral works conducted by Claude Monteux, appearing on CD for the first time. His conducting has the same vitality as his father's, but is considerably more romantic in expression, with a far wider range of tempo and dynamics. The passion of a musician who lived through the golden age of performance between the two world wars is what makes these recordings so appealing.\n\nFor this reissue the analogue masters have been newly transferred at high bit rate and high sampling frequency, yielding sound of greater clarity and finer detail than has been heard before.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"TOWER RECORDS UNIVERSAL VINTAGE COLLECTION +plus","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595642003745,"sku":"4988005850683","price":13.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4988005850683.jpg?v=1790482078","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/de-de\/products\/4988005850683","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
