He studied composition with Respighi and Casella, studied further in Paris in 1925, composed ballets for Balanchine, and immigrated to the United States in 1940, He became a citizen in 1944. Since then, while traveling back and forth between the U.S. and Europe, he wrote works in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, and film music. This album contains all of his piano concertos. Piano Concerto No. 1 was written in Paris in the 1920s and dedicated to Poulenc. The cheerful atmosphere of the piece reflects the joy of Rieti's own marriage and the birth of his son Fabio. No. 2 was originally composed as a harpsichord concerto for Wanda Landowska, but was later adapted as a piano concerto. The piano concerto No. 3 is characterized by a deeply emotional slow movement, and is performed here in its original, pre-revision version. The Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, on the other hand, is a vibrant work with a theme reminiscent of film music.
