Djimon Meir was a classical composer born in Germany and active in Italy. His works have been increasingly introduced in recent years, and the NAXOS label has released a number of his operas and vocal works. The two masses on this album, both of which were very popular throughout Europe at the time of Maile's death, are rooted in the style of the "Mass Concertata" (each piece played independently of the others) that was popular in 17th century Italy. The Mass in E minor, a large work of nearly 60 minutes, boasts a brilliant finish with skillful interplay between the singers and the orchestra, especially the excellent counterpoint writing in the orchestral part. The F minor Mass, a smaller work, is an impressive work with a melancholy melody at times. Both have long been recognized as excellent examples of Meyer's later style. born in 1955, conductor Franz Hauck is known as a specialist in church music and founded the Simon Meyer Choir in 2003. He is dedicated to introducing choral works of the 18th and 19th centuries, with a particular focus on Meir's works. Naxos Japan
