When it was premiered in 1902, it was considered incomprehensible not only by Lyadov, who conducted it, but also by his contemporaries, and Scriabin himself did not give it high marks. Today, however, the work is attracting attention as a turning point from the early to the middle period of his career. Symphony No. 4 was written in 1908. This single-movement work, written after Scriabin's turn to mysticism, is entitled \"Poem of Ecstasy,\" and is an attempt to express the same feelings of sexual sensuality and religious joy. It features a mystical sound played by a large orchestra including organ, harp, and bells, and the swell of strings and roar of brass at the overwhelming climax convey the vision of ecstasy in sound.
