Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, studied in London, and now based in Cyprus, guitarist/composer Kemal Belevi began playing guitar at the age of 11, first forming a band with his older brother to play pop and rock music, before moving to London where he switched to classical guitar. He is highly regarded not only as a performer but also as a composer. His music is unique and beautiful in every way, with traditions from many countries, including Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East. Many of the works on this album are world premiere recordings, but they are all very approachable and enjoyable to listen to. In particular, the piece labeled "Cyprus" in the title is Belevi at his best, with its exciting rhythms and exotic melodies. Naxos Japan
