He studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and began composing while working as a conductor. He joined Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballet as conductor from 1909 to 1914, and was also the conductor for the first Paris performances. He worked on a number of ballets, and in the 1911 season premiered his own \"The House of Armide,\" choreographed by Fokin. This ballet, which vividly depicts a mysterious story that takes place in an old French castle, received great acclaim. The work has a breathtaking melody reminiscent of Tchaikovsky and a beautiful sound that blends influences from French Impressionism.
