He received his first musical instruction from his father, a theater violinist, and made his debut as a pianist at the age of nine. He also studied as a pupil of Clementi, and by the age of 17 he was performing his own Piano Concerto No. 1, which made him instantly popular. Despite his fame, he did not lead a conventional life, and by the time he began composing his last concerto, No. 7, his health was gradually deteriorating as he became addicted to heavy drinking. He spent ten years battling his illness and revising the piece, and gave its premiere in Paris on Christmas Day, 1832. Chopin and Liszt were in the audience. This powerful and beautiful work, which even Schumann admired, proves that Field was not just a composer of \"salon music. The \"Irish Concerto,\" filled with Field's typical tenderness, is a revised version of the first movement of Concerto No. 2. Benjamin Frith's complete piano concerto cycle is also finally completed after 10 years of work.
