A collection of works by Ian Crews (1956-), described by Gramophone as "one of the most communicative and intriguing of contemporary composers". The "Nocturnes" on the album were written during his stay in Japan in 2010. The collection for string quintet and baritone features four poems by an Armenian poet active in the early 20th century, and effectively uses melodies taken from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Schubert's "The Shadow Man" to depict a man's relationship with "light". Prayer is a collection of songs in English, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. Born of a desire to explore "intangible love," this collection of songs, mostly written in atonality, is fragrant with fantasy from its elusive melodies. Naxos Japan
