In July 2024, the last volume of Bruckner's symphonies, No. 9 \u0026amp; F minor, was just released, and now it is available in a box set on the NAXOS label. This is the first ever recording of the entire manuscript by the same conductor, and Poschner's interpretation, which makes use of the latest findings and Bruckner's detailed instructions, succeeds in presenting a new image of Bruckner. The recording was awarded the ICMA (International Classical Music Award) 2024 Special Prize for \"a project that rethinks our habitual ways of listening and what we regard as tradition. Traditional Bruckner performances tended to be played like church organ or choral music, with less fine tempo movement (or no sense of tempo movement) and a rounded, blended sound with long, breathy singing of the melody. Poschner, however, is dedicated to the understanding that these symphonies are not church music, and he has meticulously read the composer's tempi and dynamics to ensure that they reflect the composer's style. For example, in the four different manuscripts of the second movement of the third manuscript, you can hear the effect of the subtle differences in the different speed signatures as they oscillate between andante and adagio, and you can hear the actual sound of the difference. The performances are also sincere in their reproduction of passages that have been considered immature as composers, such as the treatment of the strings in the fourth movement coda of No. 3 (first and second drafts), which is a major burden on the performers. The composer's unrounded approach conveys all the novel ideas and effects of the early manuscripts in particular. Bruckner scholar William Callaghan says of Bruckner's different manuscripts, \"Don't look for your own taste, your ideal form, your ultimate form. Every score has its own value.\" This set is a must have for fans who feel the same way. The second and third movements of the first draft of No. 2 on CD 5 are performed in the reverse order of the published score.
