Their generation had the freedom to study abroad, perform, and sign with prominent Western record labels, which was not possible in the Soviet era, and they were able to look forward to a bright future from the beginning of their careers. Simkus received his education as a pianist at the Conservatory in Riga and the University of Southern California, where he also studied composition under Peteris Vasks. His compositional career began as a student with technical solo piano works such as paraphrases, variations, and fantasias, and in recent years he has begun to work on larger orchestral works. He considers himself an artist with a romantic mind and sensibility, and says he pursues music that combines the \"virtuosity and inner spirituality\" of musicians such as Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, who combined the piano and composition in their work. The two concertos are Piano Concerto No. 1 \"Dedication to an Unwieldy Man\" and \"The Gate of Destiny\" with orchestra, and \"Dream Scenes\" for solo piano. All of these works were recorded for the first time.
