The First Symphony is performed much less frequently than the Second Symphony, perhaps because it is often told in the context of an episode in which the composer, depressed after the failure of his first performance, redeemed himself with the Second Piano Concerto. The young Rachmaninoff's originality and attractive musical ideas as his debut as a full-fledged symphonic writer have been reevaluated in recent years. The Symphonic Dances, on the other hand, was a late work, first completed as a two-piano version, then orchestrated, and became his last orchestral work. The melody of the Gregorian chant \"The Day of Wrath,\" which is often quoted in Rachmaninoff's works, is used very impressively. In the first movement of the Symphonic Dances, the theme of the First Symphony is quoted, and the \"resonance\" of the two pieces may be the intention of the coupling of these two pieces. Wilson has examined the autograph score in detail and seems to have corrected several errors in the recording.
